Some of this celebrities included Hugh Masekela, Baby Cele and Mnike hitmaker Arthur Mafokate.
The new fresh take on this iconic play made the whole experience different and worth watching. The cast was fresh, filled with new talented artist from all walk of life in SA. They gave it a fresh take not taking away the sentiments of the play and the story behind the play.
“Sarafina on stage is very different because it is live, everything happens now obviously as it is theatre, it has more choreography and it is more intense when it comes to emotions,” Tiisetso Mawane project coordinator at the State Theatre said.
The overall atmosphere in the auditorium was filled with excitement all around. People were excited for the show. After waiting for almost 15 years for the first of its kind, they waited in anticipation and they were taken on one beautiful theatrical journey. They were served with the best South Africa has to offer.
“It was a huge deal, it is something that ever since I have been with the State Theatre. I have never experience such an opening night,” Tiisetso said.
The State Theatre felt very honoured to host such a play. It was not an easy ride planning with a few challenges there and there but all of which they are glad happened. All they wanted to do was to meet Dr Ngema’s expectations and they were happy with the turn out.
“It was a great honour although they were challenges because we were working with the biggest icon which is Dr Mbongeni Ngema but it was a great pleasure, though people were very nervous because we didn’t know what to expect but it was a good turn out,” Tiisetso added.
Sarafina will be touring all over SA and Bloemfontein is next stop.
