Following the victory against Maritzburg United on Tuesday night, the newly appointed Orlando Pirates coach Kjell Joenvret said ‘they are going to sleep well tonight’.
The Buccaneers had a good start to the game and they managed to take the lead through Ayanda Gcaba in the 13th minute when he headed home Oupa Manyisa’s corner-kick.
The Team of Choice should have leveled matters in the 35th minute, but Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane produced a breathtaking save to deny Bandile Shandu from close range.
Things went from bad to worse for Maritzburg in the second-half when Brian Mandela was sent off on the hour-mark when he picked up his second yellow card.
The home side then took advantage of their numerical advantage as Tendai Ndoro combined with Dove Wome, who scored from close range to make it 2-0 to Pirates in the 79th minute.
Deolin Mekoa, the Maritzburg midfielder, was also sent off with seven minutes left on the clock and the visitors ended the match with nine men – with Pirates winning 2-0 on the night.
The Sea Robbers could not wait to express how he feels about tonight’s win.
“Maybe it was not a fantastic game to watch, but for us it was very important to win the game again and it was also a clean sheet,” he said in post-match comments.
“In the end, I don’t know what to say. We had the ability to score more goals with their two red cards, but at the same time, I’m not going to be angry about that, because the important thing was to win a game again so we can stop talking about that.
“You could see that there were players that were tired, but as I said we played a few days ago, but I want to give them a chance. I could’ve changed anyone – I just wanted a few fresh legs.
“We are going to sleep well tonight, we are a little more happy,” he concluded.
