Vocalist Thabiso Mthombeni (23) has been exposed to singing ever since he was a young man and it was in the church choir where he was entrusted with leading worship and praise songs during the church services which saw him become the vocalist he is today.
Born and bred in Kwamhlanga, Mpumalanga, Thabiso says growing up in a Christian family meant going to church every Sunday. The church environment enabled him to realise that he has a gift of singing and therefore going to church influenced his love for the Gospel genre.
Thabiso is part of the newly formed South African State Theatre Youth (SAST) Choir and his beautiful tone and range got him a standing ovation at the Launch of the SAST Youth Choir during his solo performance. But before this he has also enjoyed his fair share of local group choir’s experiences that did not work out, but like any other patient musician, Thabiso says these failures have taught him so much by giving him a glance at the things to expect in the entertainment industry.
Thabiso’s love for music grew so big that it became more than just a dream but a passion that would provide him with income. He is a well-seasoned vocalist who is not limited to Gospel music but also who is able to expand to other music genres. Thabiso is also a song writer who hopes to share some of his own music with the rest of the world. He is currently spending a lot of his time working on improving and exploring his craft. His love for the piano has led him to want to make a song that would incorporate his vocals and the piano.
Thabiso has worked with a lot of reputable musicians in the entertainment industry and they include Donny and Bathabile Skosana. He is going to be working with Zinhle Mahlangu, who will be recording a live DVD soon.
Thabiso says that he looks up to Ntokozo Mbambo Mbatha and Mabongi Mabaso as his musical inspirations and because of this, it is clear that his voice can go to places so effortlessly and beautifully like these two music power houses. “Their voices, music sense and ability to deliver a message through songs ministers a lot in my life,” Thabiso adds.
Thabiso is not only a musician, he is an aspiring businessman who is embarking on a journey of entrepreneurship. He says he is still trying to locate where he would best fit but he knows that it will be music related. Thabiso wants to brand himself as ‘Thabiso the Musician’ and source his income through his brand and passion. Thabiso says that he is trying to grab as many opportunities that come his way that would give him his break in the entertainment industry in hopes that one day he will have his own live DVD recording.
It is all humble beginnings for this young talented man and with the rate he is currently pushing at, it is safe to say we will see a lot of him in the industry.
