A lot of the content you see on Mzanzi Magic (Dstv channel 161) is relatively attributed to the great work of Ferguson Films, owned by business partners and married couple; Shona and Connie Ferguson. Ferguson Films has produced flaming telenovela content that makes the viewers urge for more and keeping them glued to their screens.
With Shona Ferguson being the Creative director and Connie Ferguson being the Art director of Ferguson Films, the two have increasingly made astonishing local drama series that have a high number of fans and viewers in the past two years and they have introduced new and fresh talent such as the likes of Kamo Modisakae who played the role of “Bassie” in Rockville Season 4.
Igazi, the popular isiXhosa melodrama has recently been brought back as Season 2 on our screens on the 16th of April 2017. This melodrama has caused a media frenzy with fans asking for more after season 1. Sunday television has gotten even more interesting with the return of Ferguson Films and their motive to showcase the events that happen in traditional and royal families in the rural areas; events that people know about but are afraid to talk about. Igazi aims to show how families will go through extra lengths of spilling blood and casting witchcraft spells on each other in order to get the throne. Backstabbing lies and betrayal is the ultimate key that Igazi the telenovela exposes.
One of the most current and famous drama series that plays weekdays on Mzansi Magic Monday to Thursday is The Queen. The Queen is a show of good vs evil, the conflict of love vs money and giving up vs going as far as possible and using many means for an era. The Queen is a telenovela that talks about a woman (Connie Ferguson who plays the role of Harriet) who is a successful businesswoman and a loving wife that discovers her husband’s dreadful secrets and is forced into a corner that leaves her with no choice but to do the unthinkable.
Rockville is a South African soap opera created by Ferguson Films. The show revolves around two different black families- the middle-class Bogatsu’s and the working class Mabaso’s who are embroiled in an ongoing feud. Connie Ferguson mentioned in her interview with ZAlebs that she is not sure when the return of Rockville Season 5 will be put back on our screens but she does encourage viewers to be patient with them as they are currently working on Igazi and The Queen.
