With only two days left to the kickoff of the MTN 8 competition, Maritzburg United received a boost to back up their financial problems.
Msunduzi Municipality offered them a new three-year multi-million rand deal which will see them pocketing R9 million per year to take care of their financial needs and maintain the Premier Soccer League (PSL) standards and requirements.
According to reports, the amount offered is lower than the previous arrangement which saw Maritzburg receive R12m annually. Club Chairman Farook Kadodia said they will accept the offer but will continue looking for other sponsors because they have a shortfall of about R6-million to run the team.
“We have accepted this figure as we would have been shattered with nothing, but we’ll continue to look for a title sponsor,” said Kadodia.
Meanwhile, the team have selection issues following their MTN8 Cup opener against league runners-up Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.
Both Richard Ofori and Brian Onyango will be absent during the encounter due to paper work issues, while Siyanda Xulu and Liam Youlley are below the required fitness levels following their recent arrival from Kaizer Chiefs and Australia respectively.
Versatile young Zimbabwean, Blessing Moyo will also not be seen in the encounter due to a mutual agreement that has saw his contract terminated.
The MTN 8 competition will kick-off on Friday, 11 August 2017 with Bidvest Wits hosting Golden Arrows at Bidvest Stadium, kick-off at 20:00.
