Mduduzi Dawud Phungula (22), is surely in the lime light having had recently won the Best Youth Radio Initiator at the KwaZulu-Natal Young Achievers Awards held on the 5th of August 2017. The multi-talented award winning radio presenter at Radio Al Ansaar and RadioDUT is now nominated for the Best TV Presenter for the Live Your Dream Awards.

Born and bred in Inchanga, KwaZulu Natal (KZN), Phungula an introvert at heart until he cited poetry in Grade 8 is now a renowned YouTube blogger and a first year journalism student at Durban University of Technology. Though he realized at a later stage that being on TV was not easy in KZN, standing ovation received after Phungula cited his poetry built his confidence slowly bringing out the extrovert in him.

His focus shifted to radio where in grade 10 he joined a radio station in Inchanga which was unfortunately shut down. Driven by his new found love, Phungula auditioned for a number of radio stations however after being rejected by many he finally got his breakthrough at Radio Al Ansaar.

Brought up from good morals and values, he appreciates his mother for the support she has given and continues to give him but most importantly for teaching him that essence of respect.  “Respect is one of the important things to me, that is why I am where I am today,” he said.

“I will never get tired of doing what I am passionate about. Being focused and doing my thing is what got me where I am today,” said Phungula.

The 22-year-old looks up to the likes of DJ Fresh describing him as a man who breaks boundaries, because he joined a radio station, 5 FM which was then known as Radio 5, that people deemed to be as a non-multi-racial radio station and being the bold man he is he made a change. “Nomalanga, the flame is also one of the people who inspire me because she makes things happen,” Phungula added.

Living by the motto ‘use what you have, to get what you don’t have,’ Phungula believes everything is possible and you don’t have to go to Johannesburg to make it!
