Thuso Mbedu was first introduced to our screens as the naive 21-year-old Kitso Medupe on e.tv’s Scandal! Thuso is a 25-year-old girl from KwaZulu-Natal who was raised by her grandmother after her mother passed on due to a brain tumour.
South Africa has witnessed Thuso rise to stardom in a series of TV roles but first as Kitso Medupe, and then more recently Bonnie on Saints and Sinners and Winnie on Isithunzi, a role that has mostly led to her nomination at the Emmy Awards.
Thuso expressed her excitement on Instagram by saying: “[s]o it’s been brought to my attention that I’ve been nominated for the INTERNATIONAL EMMY AWARDS which is kind of a BIG DEAL for me. I have to say my thank yous.
“I am here by the grace of God! So before I say anything else: Thank you Jesus. I don’t know how to put this into words. I’ve screamed, I’ve danced and jumped, I’ve prayed (and my vocabulary would not rise to the occasion) and I’ve cried. I am so humbled…” she then went on to thank all the people she feels contributed to this nomination.”
Thuso is nominated in the category best performance by an actress alongside Adriana Esteves, Justiça; TV Globo – Brazil, Sonja Gerhardt, Ku’damm 56; UFA Fiction/ZDF – Germany, Thuso Mbedu, Is’thunzi; Mzansi Magic/Rapid Blue – South Africa.
Since Thuso announced her nomination, celebrities, fans and supporters have sent in their congratulatory messages to the star including:
