The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape at the weekend said it was with “great sadness” that it had learned of the passing of Overstrand Municipality Executive Mayor Alderman Rudolph Smith.
“A loved and highly respected public servant, Ald Rudolph Smith regrettably passed away this morning due to complications following a surgery to remove a benign brain tumour with which he was diagnosed in November 2017,” the DA said in a terse statement on Friday.
DA Member of the Provincial Parliament and constituency head in Overstrand, Masizole Mnqasela, said: “I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Ald Smith’s family and loved ones during this difficult time”.
Smith, a DA member, was a councillor for 14 years, and the deputy executive mayor of the Overstrand Municipality before being appointed as the executive mayor in August last year.
“He presented an unwavering dedication to the people of his constituency, and his presence will be sorely missed,” lamented Mnqasela.
The DA said any further information regarding the memorial service or funeral arrangements will be “communicated in due course”.
