Orlando Pirates had too much in their locker for Mamelodi Sundowns to seal a headline 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon in a packed Loftus Versveld Stadium.
The buccaneers wasted no time as they opened proceedings with an early goal in the 2nd minute of the game through Ntsikelelo Nyauza who concluded a cross with a rooftop shot past Dennis Onyango to give Bucs the lead.
Sundowns’ front men asked questions to Bucs keeper Jackson Mabokgwane but the keeper pulled off save after save to keep the Buccuneers in the lead as he stopped clear cut chances from Percy Tau, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Themba Zwane in a space of 10 minutes.
Pirates responded with a second goal in the 17th minute courtesy of a fine long range effort from Mpho Makola which gave Onyango no chance to make it 2-0.
The Brazilians efforts to get back in the game were rewarded in the 38th minute when Percy Tau provided a fine finish past Mabokgwane to make it 2-1. The game went into the break with Pirates in the lead.
Downs started the second half like a house on fire and came close to leveling matters in the 68th minute through efforts from Anthony Laffor and Hlompho Kekana which were dealt with by Mabokgwane who displayed a man of the match performance.
Luvuyo Memela put the game to bed in the 83rd minute after unleashing a shot inside the box which found its way into the back of the net to make it 3-1.
Pitso Mosimane’s troops tried with all their might to reduce the score line but their efforts proved to be unfruitful as Pirates were winners on the day, recording another sublime victory following their 3-1 victory over Baroka last week.
