Tunisia’s preparations for the 2018 Russia FIFA World Cup had been gathering peace in the team arrival at Doha Qatar last week, for a two week training camp at Aspire Zone Foundation.

Eagles of Carthage were the first African country to win a game at the World Cup finals when they defeated Mexico 3-1 in 1978. After 20 year gab Tunisia then enjoyed streak of three further appearances at the pedals 1998 to 2006, and are yet to advance beyond the group stage.

Unbeaten during the African World Cup qualifier, they secure their firth appearance at the finals, topping their group, which had DR Congo, Libya and Guinea. Manager Nabil Maaloul has selected 26 players to join the training camp ahead of a tough start in Russia.

Tunisia had been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, England and Panama, and they will begin the World Cup campaign against England on the 18th of June. With the new generation of players in their ranks including, midfielder Wahbi Khazri, who plays French league Stade Rennais FC and Olympic Marseille defender Aymen Abdennour, Tunisia’s main roster in Russia.

Maaloul however has high hopes of advancing into the knockout stages in Russia. “We will keep our hope and dreams to the end” he said.

“We do not care who are our opponents are, first target is to qualify to the second round, we will do our best in our first match against England. It is true that the English team on paper are favourites, because they have players from the English Premier League, which in my view is the best league in the World.”

”Nevertheless we have our own weapons, our own players, we have great confidence in our players and we aim to win the match.” he concluded
