After government appointed new Eskom board on weekend, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has welcomed the appointment of Jabu Mabuza as the new chairperson and believes that his integrity will bring about change.
Businessman Jabu Mabuza and Phakamani Hadebe has been appointed as Eskom’s new chairperson and acting group chief executive respectively.
“It is indeed the leadership of Jabu Mabuza that brought Telkom to stability and profitability, alongside Sipho Maseko. We express confidence in his demonstrated integrity and track record,” said the EFF in a statement.
Urging Mabuza to be fair and deal with corruption accordingly the EFF said; “We indicate that he should not be tempted to corrupt the institution, and should act decisively against all corrupt officials. His immediate task and that of the board should be cancellation of the Tegeta Coal deal and a general review all the coal supply deals Eskom signed under apartheid.”
Business Leadership South Africa’s(BLSA) CEO Bonang Mohale said the appointment of the board is a clear display of commitment by government to transform state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
BLSA says it believes the board can quickly restore stability to the operations of Eskom, and the decision by government shows what is possible when there is political will.
Mohale said: “Not only does he (Mabuza) bring a wealth of commercial experience and illustrious experience from both the public and private sectors, he also brings with him unimpeachable integrity – a trait that is so badly needed right now in our country. We appreciate the fact that he has agreed to accept another call to serve his country as chairman of Eskom, over and above his other enormous responsibilities in both the private and public sectors.”
