Barcelona were looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit when they took on Espanyol, in the second leg of quarter final tie in the Copa Del Rey, as Barca won 2-o at Camp Nou.
Barca threw out the blocks in the contest as they took the lead, inside the opening 10 minutes, Aleix Vidal’s cross from the right found Luis Suárez at the far post and the Uruguayan nodded home effortlessly.
Espanyol almost hit back straight away but Jasper Cillessen was able to save a shot from Gerard Moreno, who had been set up by Sergi Darder. Barcelona looked to press their advantage but Messi’s shot from 40 yards, with 19 minutes on the clock, was high and wide of the Espanyol goal.
The Blaugrana continued to show that they are the team to beat in 2017/18 season as they showed a world class performance as they double their tally, through a deflected Leonel Messi strike to make 2-0 up.
With Barca in contro, coach Ernesto Valverde then decided to give Phillipe Coutinho his debut and he came on with a round of applause. The Brazilian was almost off the mark with two assist as he set up Suarez, who fired straight at the goalkeeper before Ivan Rakitic also couldn’t beat the keeper.
Bacrcelona nearly made it 3-0 after a stunning pass in the box by Rakitic but Leo Messi’s header came off the woodwork. At the end of the game Barca held on to a 2-0 victory, advancing 2-1 on aggregate.
