Yannick Zakri scored twice following Mosa Lebusa’s opening goal as the hosts stunned Bucs in the Mother City.
Bucs were hoping to extend their good run in the PSL with a victory over a struggling Urban Warriors side and also put pressure on the league log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Milutin Sredojevic’s side had defeated Platinum Stars 2-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.
The Serbian tactician made two changes to the team that faced relegation-threatened stars with Marshall Munetsi and Thabiso Kutumela replacing Gladwin Shitolo and Riyaad Norodien. New signing Xola Mlambo was named amongst the substitutes, while Thamsanqa Gabuza made his return to the 18-man match day.
Meanwhile, Ajax duo Muhsin Ertugral and Tendai Ndoro faced their former club for the first time since leaving Pirates last year. Turkish mentor Ertugral named Ndoro in the starting after the PSL DRC declared eligible for selection despite Ajax having violated Fifa rules by fielding him recently.
The hosts got off to the perfect start as they broke the deadlock just 11 minutes into the game after the Bucs defence was caught napping. Yagan Sasman’s well-taken corner-kick was headed home by an unmarked Mosa Lebusa to make it 1-0 to Ajax as the relegation-threatened side made a dream start to the game.
Pirates kept rotating the ball and trying to prise an opening but did not have enough shots on goal.
There was a horror miss from Innocent Maela 10 minutes into the second half and a fine save from substitute ‘keeper Jody February to deny Memela.
Sredojevich added Lyle Foster and Gabuza to attack to try and break down the home defence but Justin Shonga had two poor efforts late in the game as Ajax held out … and then caught Pirates on a sole counter attack in the second half with Siyanda Zwane setting up Zakri to make it 3-0 in the 83rd minute.
