Why Sundowns Have Upper Hand For League Title

Isaac Ndou

With the league’s last 10 games now in effect, current log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns look well on course to end their season with the league trophy on their hands looking at how things stand for the chasing pack behind them.

Sundowns currently top the standings with 38 points after 20 games and the team behind them is Orlando Pirates with 33 points and have played a game more, something which could work in Sundowns’ favour. Another thing to consider with Pirates chasing Sundowns is that they have a reputation of choking whilst dropping points, something Pitso Mosimane’s team have in the recent years seen less of.

Free State stars who are on third position with 32 points after 20 games would have roofing odds against them to giving the Brazilians a challenge for the league title. They have done well for themselves this season but looking at the standard of the league’s results this season, they themselves are probably surprised to be where they are, considering they have won 3 matches less than Sundowns but find themselves on third position.

Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City both have 31 points after 20 games, 7 less than Sundowns. Kaizer Chiefs, like Pirates have a difficulty of being consistent as they will probably drop some points in the most crucial time. They have won only 7 games this season, five less than the leaders. Although the fact that Steve Kompela is under pressure to deliver a trophy could work in their favour to avoid choking while hoping Downs drop some points.

Cape Town City have won 9 times this season and could be higher in the table provided they had not lost 7 games this season, more than all teams in the league race. That fact probably puts them against odds to win the league title at the end of the season. Benni McCarthy’s men are currently restructuring after losing key players this season, so the team they currently have has not gelled enough to go on war for the league title.
