PRETORIA: SuperSport United head coach Eric Tinkler has revealed his team are currently pushing to finish the season within the top 8, more preferably within the top 6 to redeem themselves.
Matsatsantsa have had a difficult season in the league and the coach who is in his first season with the Pretoria-based club believes that Caf Confederations cup commitments had a role to play n his team’s poor league showing. They have however managed to have something to show come end of the season, that being the MTN8 trophy they clinched earlier in the season.
“For us, I think this season so far has been quite an exceptional season, when we look at the 2017 Nedbank Cup and then obviously, the confederations Cup and MTN8. But the league is always priority and, for us a club, we need to be finishing in the top eight, top six preferably. Our aspirations in the beginning of the season was obviously higher, we were looking to go for the title,” explained Tinkler
SuperSport will take part in this years’ Caf Confederations Cup again as they won the Nedbank Cup last season. However that being a great competition to be in, Tinkler is unsure whether they should prioritise CAF success if it is going to affect their league mandate.
“I honestly believe what happened in Africa really did hurt us as a team, and right now we need to be questioning how far we really want to go in this years’ CAF competition , knowing the effects it had on the team and the squad,” he concluded.
They will next be in action against relegation candidates Platinum Stars in Rustenburg on Tuesday in league action. A win for SuperSport can see them move from 11th position they are currently in and probably find a way into the top 8.
