RICHARDS BAY: Stones are flying as UniZulu students demand monthly allowances in a violent protest.

Several students suffered injuries from flying stones as angry students embarked on a violence protest at the University of Zululand in KwaDlangezwa.

At about 9.45am this morning, students carrying sticks, bottles and other materials forced entry into lecture halls and stopped lectures..

The protest is is connection with unpaid monthly allowances which were apparently promised to them.

According to our sources, the strike is also related to unfair disbursement of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

“Students that stays outside the university have not been allocated NSFAS as promised by the university and that is why the SRC organised a strike,” said the source.

The source explains that management has not yet communicated any information to students regarding funding their allowances, and there are rumours that only some students will be receiving allowances

When Unizulu opened on 9 February, there was a promise made that all student allowances would be paid by the next Friday. On that Friday, only some students paid, while others continue to wait for their allowances.

In reaction to not receiving allowances, students then embarked on a strike.

“A lot of students say that are not paid, so they have no funds for food, transport or accommodation. That’s the reason for the strike.”

The source added that there is a community strike happening tomorrow.

This comes after the community embarked on a protest demanding that allowances be paid 14 days ago. No action has been taken since.
