JOHANNESBURG: On Thursday, the DA announced that that it’s planning to report Malema to the Equality Court for what it deems to be hate speech and incitement of violence.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of deliberately misreading and misinterpreting the statements made by its leader Julius Malema on the embattled Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Athol Trollip.

On Thursday, the DA announced that that it’s planning to report Malema to the Equality Court for what it deems to be hate speech and incitement of violence.

The party quoted the outspoken leader as saying: “[W]e are going to remove a mayor of PE […] [w]e are going for your white man in PE. We are going to cut the throat.”

However, speaking to a Johannesburg based talk radio, Power FM, EFF’s spokesperson Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi refuted claims that they plan on physically attacking Trollip.

“Cutting a throat is not an indication of violence, it’s figurative, [and] your first google search will tell you that.

“It’s a deliberate attempt to shift attention from the real issue which is their attitude to the land question and the principle of land expropriation without compensation as mean to address the historical injustices…against black people.”

The EFF said it’s still forging ahead with plans to table a motion of no confidence in Trollip as a punishment to the DA for failing to side with their motion in Parliament this week.

“No amount of going to Equality Court is going to stop us from removing Athol Trollip as a means to respond to the insensitivity that they demonstrated in Parliament to the question of land reform,” Ndlozi added.
