PRETORIA: It will undoubtedly be a David vs Goliath clash when Mamelodi Sundowns host third tier club Eastern Cape Bees FC in a Nedbank Cup last 16 fixture at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday night.
The ABC Motsepe League side found their way into the last 16 after ousting Mariveni United in the last 32 round. They are clearly the underdogs in the tie and are potential victims of a massive thrashing, considering the Brazilians have a thing for giving “small” teams a hiding as they beat Powerlines FC 24-0 in the past.
The Brazilians will be in action for the first time after their trip to Africa in the CAF Champions League where they drew with Rwandan side Ryan Sports. They will be without two key players in the form of Tiyani Mabunda and Sibusiso Vilkakazi who scored a brace in their last domestic game against AmaZulu.
The only thing that can lead to Bees giving a sting to the African Champions is if Pitso Mosimane and his men take the amateur team for granted, something which always comes back to bite the so called “big” teams in fixtures like this. If Sundowns go into the game with enough respect for the Eastern Cape outfit, then they will have set themselves for a comfortable ride to the competition’s last 8.
The winner of the tie will put their name in the last 8 draw pot which will take place on Thursday after the fixture between Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates is played on Wednesday night. The Brazilians will host the EC Bees at the Loftus Versveld tonight, kick off at 20h30.
