PRETORIA: The Democratic Alliance (DA) will on Tuesday launch what it calls the DA’s #SafeSchools campaign in Tshwane following cases of sexual and physical abuse in schools throughout the country.
Amongst people who will launch this campaign, it is understood that DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education, Ian Ollis MP, Shadow Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Nomsa Marchesi MP and Member of the Basic Education Portfolio, Sonja Boshoff Member of Parliament (MP) will be part of the launch.
The DA said its officials will be joined by Shadow Minister of Police, Zakhele Mbhele MP, Shadow Minister of Social Development, Bridget Masango MP, Gauteng Shadow MEC of Education, Khume Ramulifho MPL and Regional Chairperson, Abel Tau.
Outlining the reason for the launch, the DA said its main priority is the safety of children in schools; “the scourge of sexual and physical violence in our schools has reached crisis levels, our children are sent to school to be educated but end up being victims of violence often from the very people who are meant to protect them,” said the DA.
According to the DA, problems of teacher misconduct and learner violence can only be solved through a collaborative effort by the national police, basic education, and social development and justice departments, together with provincial departments of education.
