JOHANNESBURG- Yesterday the Motsepe foundation held an event at the Regina Mundi Church in Rockville, Soweto, where the amount of R8.5 Million was donated to bring changes in the local schools and churches that’s facing infrastructure crisis.
With relieve from the foundation, the money which was donate will therefore fix the infrastructure in several local schools and churches.
The intervention followed by the recent incident, where it has left the Nation in shock after a five-year-old pupil drowned in a pit toilet at Luna Primary School in Bizana on the Eastern Cape earlier this month.
Last week, the Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga made an announcement that her department has set up a team around the country that will do an audit of schools that have pit toilets with an intend to eradicate unsafe and inadequate toilets.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the donations will go a long way to improving education at township schools.
“We are quite pleased that the Motsepe Foundation chose our schools, especially in Soweto, for upgrades. But most importantly to replace things that are normally stolen in our schools and also to provide the necessary guidance that our children need”, he added.
Lesufi said the children benefitting should be the last generation to rely on social grants because of the initiatives that have been made towards their education.
“We want our children to perform well so they can compete with the best in the world,” Lesufi said.
In total, 37 beneficiaries benefited from the donations.
