JOHANNESBURG – The Correctional Services Department said it’s confident that prisoners who escaped from the Johannesburg Central Prison on Monday morning will be found and dealt with lawfully.

It has been reported that sixteen inmates escaped from the prison known as Sun City during the early hours of the morning by breaking through the iron bars of the prison windows.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said a criminal offence case has been opened with the South African Police Services (SAPS) following the incident; “According to a preliminary investigation, these remand detainees escaped in the morning at approximately 03:00. They escaped through a pipe shaft and used an object to break the wall then proceeded to the fence. A criminal case has been opened with the SAPS.”

“The Department of Correctional Services and SAPS have launched a manhunt following an escape of 16 Remand Detainees from Johannesburg Correctional Centre, Medium A,” said Nxumalo.

The department says it has a good track record in re-arresting prisoners on the run and will find the escaped prisoners.
