JOHANNESBURG: Highlands Park have returned to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in style after thrashing Shaun Bartlett’s University Of Pretoria 5-1 to be crowned NFD Champions.
The Lions of the North were relegated at the end of the 2017/2018 season but quickly got proceedings under way in their quest to make a return to South Africa’s elite league. They put in stellar performances week in, week out to collect points from the get go.
The club opened up a 15 points lead at the top from second placed Black Leopards with four games left to play in the season. They now have 59 points from their 18 wins, 5 draws and only three losses in their league matches this season to leap frog Thanda Royal Zulu’s record they had set last season.
Owen Da Gama’s team scored a remarkable 56 goals and only conceded 11 in those league matches to give them a superior goal difference of +45. He will hope they can carry the form they displayed this season into the PSL where they will be playing next season.
They will conclude their remaining four fixtures of the season against Mthatha Bucks (H), Cape Town All Stars (A), Black Leopards (H) and lastly away at Stellenbosch FC on 06 May.
