JOHANNESBURG: ANC Youth League (YL) spokesperson, Mlondi Mkhize, says the organisation is ready to rally behind its president, Collen Maine.
In a video that has gone viral, Maine confessed to members of the ANC at a memorial service for the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in the Free State, that he had met with the controversial Gupta family.
Maine said North West Premier, Supra Mahumapelo, had introduced him to the controversial Gupta family. Maine also said that he is ready to face the courts should he have to.
The Gupta family stands accused of being involved in corrupt activities including “capturing the state.”
The beleaguered leader of the youth league has come under fire from other leaders of the party, some accusing him of being a ‘sellout’ and must ‘resign’.
Addressing another memorial service on Thursday‚ the youth league’s deputy secretary-general‚ Thandi Moraka‚ took a swipe at Maine for his comments‚ saying he does not deserve to be called a comrade.
“He is a sellout of note. Immediately after Nasrec comrade Collen went to comrade Cyril and said to him that as the youth league we want to apologise for having supported comrade Nkosazana‚” said Moraka.
She added that the youth league had never given Maine a mandate to apologise to Ramaphosa.
“We want to state it categorically here … that apology was not representing us as the youth of this country. We believed in comrade Nkosazana and we cannot be crucified for having supported a woman‚” she said to loud applause.
However, Mkhize is reportedly to have said that “the ANCYL is ready to rally behind Maine should he be summoned to court to account for his alleged meetings with the family. He did say, however, that the organisation would have to take his own words into account before making that decision.”
Meanwhile, Western Cape ANCYL Deputy Chairperson, Mfuzo Zenzile has also call on the embattled ANCYL president to ‘voluntarily’ request to make a presentation before the state capture commission of inquiry as recommended by former Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela.
Speaking to the Republic Mail, Zenzile said, “He must stop playing gallery during the difficult period that we as the ANC and country finds ourselves in, he (Maine) must voluntarily appear before the inquiry into state capture and tell the nation after he was introduced, what happened? Who did what? What was discussed during the meeting and when did he meet the Guptas? Because previously he denied having met the Guptas.”
Maine, who previously denied meeting the Guptas and has publicly defended the brothers, made a startling admission, he said unlike me and others, Mama Winnie refused to meet with the family. He said when they’re called to account to the courts and commissions, ANC comrades must not support them.

In 2016, Maine was accused of accepting over R100,000 towards his bond – and other gifts – from the family. But he denied this.
However, Mkhize said except Maine who admitted that he met the family but he was unaware of any other youth league member who has also met with the Gupta family.
“The Youth League is in no position to say we can expect more or less. We were not aware of the fact that he had gone there, who took him there and when was he taken there,” he said.
“We don’t know to what extent nor to what was it that was discussed in their meetings or what was the nature of their relationship,” he added.
