JOHANNESBURG: Motsepe has said that the highly anticipated friendly encounter between the Brazilians and Barcelona is mainly expected to inspire South Africa’s youth to believe they can become the best in the world.
Sundowns will play the Catalan club at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday 16 May for the second time after meeting in 2007 where Barca won the game 2-1 at Loftus Versveld Stadium in Pretoria. The La Liga Champions will bring along the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Philipe Coutinho and Andres Iniesta for the game which is also part of the Nelson Mandela centenary celebrations.
“This game is important for South African football. We are humbled as Mamelodi Sundowns to play party in a match that’s also part of the Nelson Mandela centenary celebrations. But this is mainly for the youth. I know how big this is for the youth. I remember when I was a young follower of football and I went to the Orlando Stadium and watched all the great players. They inspired me. Some of them are alive today and they don’t know it was such an honour for me just to touch them.
“There are many young footballers who we know that watching Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta will inspire them to realise their dreams, whatever dreams those might be,” said Patrice Motsepe on Sundowns’ website.
The match which was approved by the South African Football Association and continental football governing body CAF will kick of at 18h00 central African time at the FNB Stadium. Tickets are selling from R40 to R550 and are expected to be sold out by Friday.
