JOHANNESBURG: Gauteng Premier David Makhura has referred alleged financial irregularities in the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).
The alleged irregularities involving the contracting and prepayment made to Enviro-Mobi was one of the matters referred to the SIU for investigation.
Gauteng government spokesperson Thabo Masebe spoke to the POWER Drive host Thabiso Tema on Wednesday on the matter.
“Treasury conducted investigations and found that the department made a payment of R26 million for the delivery of 200 vehicles. None of the cars were delivered to the recipients. On further investigations it was established that only 47 vehicles were actually made.”
The department’s internal audit and the provincial treasury’s report raised concerns regarding a pre-payment of R26 million made to Enviro-Mobi for the supply of motorised three-wheeler vehicles
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe fingered in the matter. The Mail & Guardian reported that Mabe has been implicated in a tender worth R49m awarded to the Mvest Trust by the North West Development Corporation (NWDC, a subsidiary of the provincial government.
Mabe has repeatedly denied having benefited from the multi-million rand tender and said he would be heading to the Press Ombudsman to clear his name.
