JOHANNESBURG: SuperSport United are reportedly considering making former Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela their new coach for next season as their search for a new mentor continues.
Kaitano Thembo took over the reigns after the club parted ways with former Orlando Pirates coach Erik Tinkler who was on his debut season as the club. Since then, Matsatsantsa have been in the market looking for his replacement.
Without many options available in the country right now, they were first strongly linked with Free State Stars Luc Eymael who won the Nedbank Cup in his first season at the Bethlehem club, but nothing has materialised from those links.
They were then to confirm through their Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stan Matthews that they were after Orlando Pirates’ assistant coach Rhulani Mokwena to coach their club, but the young coach is believed to be staying put with the Sea Robbers.
Komphela who left his job at Kaizer Chiefs towards the end of the season after spending three years at the club and failed to get any silverware is the topping candidate for consideration for United.
Komphela may be a good movement for Matsatsantsa as he left Naturena with a great deal of experience which may be tipped to work for SuperSport, considering the nature of the two clubs.
He may just finally break his trophy burden and deliver that at Matsatsantsa, capitalizing on what he has learnt at Chiefs in the past three years where he always came close to winning trophies but would loose out at the most vital time.
Matsatsantsa are expected to make an announcement of their new coach starting as from next week as pre-season draws closer.
