JOHANNESBURG: It’s day two of the Nugent Commission of Inquiry into tax administration and governance at the South African Revenue Services (Sars).

On Tuesday, Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan testified at the inquiry and said that among the reasons provided for the need for Moyane to restructure Sars, was because it was in a mess.

“Yesterday Minister Pravin Gordhan’s one and half hour presentation really painted a picture of where the revenue service was to where it ended up at the time of Tom Moyane to his now suspension,”

In his evidence to the inquiry, Pravin Gordhan says this is where state capture found it’s rooted and he referred to those notorious emails to say when I started looking at those emails, I saw the dots then being connected to say this was not incidental.

Hunter says it would be critical for Moyane to testify at the inquiry. She says today’s interesting testimony came from the Head of Integrity at Sars.

“She talks about whoever was part of the so-called close to your Ivan Pillay’s or the previous administration, was sort of purged. And people who were earning your R1.1 million up to R1.2 million per annum were sitting there without any work.”
