JOHANNESBURG: Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has given former Bucs captain Benson Mhlongo his blessings as he embarks on his first role as head coach.
The 37-year-old former defender spent two seasons as assistant coach at Pirates and will now sit at the helm of National First Division (NFD) newcomers TS Sporting after he was appointed head coach of the club.
The man who played for Mamelodi Sundowns before joining the Buccaneers from 2008 till 2012 and went on to make 41 appearances has accumulated a notable deal of experience as he also had a spell as Pirates’ Multichoice Diski Challenge coach to add to his experience as the coach.
Mhlongo’s departure from the Buccaneers was sealed after the Iron Duke met with Sporting Chairman Slungu Thobela on Monday. Pirates have engaged with Sporting before as they sent two of their players away on loan to the NFD side.
The Soweto Giants wished Mhlongo well in his future endeavours as he takes upon his first head coaching role.
