JOHANNESBURG: The police have reportedly opened a murder docket and the university will remain closed.
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) on Tuesday evening confirmed the death of a student during a fees protest at its Steve Biko campus.
The EFF student command in KwaZulu-Natal claimed the student was one of their members. In a video posted on social media by a Facebook user, the student can be seen being picked up by other fellow members of the party after their scuffle with the security guards.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the university said the student had died at the City Hospital in Durban while being treated, but they withheld the victim’s identity.
A scuffle is believed to have broken out between students and security guards, and a female bystander was also struck. The Republic Mail can confirm that the police have opened a murder case, but this is subject to change.
“[The] cause of death and details of the incident are not yet clear as the matter is still subject to a preliminary investigation by police officials. The university is saddened by this unfortunate incident, and due to the sensitivity of this incident the university cannot divulge further details at this stage,” DUT said in a statement.
Earlier before the student was shot at, the Facebook user also posted another video where students can be seen throwing stones at the security guards.
