Former Minister of Sport and Recreation and Police, Mr Fikile Mbalula shouldn’t pretend he had no pre-existing relationship with the Guptas.
Former Finance Minister, Mr Trevor Manuel fingered Mr Mbalula during his testimony at the state capture inquiry. Mr Mbalula allegedly told an ANC NEC meeting the Guptas informed him of his appointment as sports minister, rather than then-president, Mr Jacob Zuma.
Mr Manuel also accused Mr Zuma of handing over his presidential rights to the Gupta family.
He testified that Mr Mbalula gave emotional testimony at an ANC NEC meeting in August 2011 about the Guptas.
Meanwhile, former communications minister, Mr Siphiwe Nyanda’s told the commission he was astounded when Mr Zuma and the NEC didn’t react to Mr Mbalula’s confession.
In a letter, Mr Mbalula says he wasn’t able to meet the 22nd of February deadline to respond to Mr Manuel and has asked for an extension.
